Symbolism of the card

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black banner marked with a white rose. Before him lie a fallen king, while a child, a young woman and a bishop face him in different ways – one with innocence, one turning away, one in prayer. In the distance a river flows and the sun rises between two towers. Death comes to everyone, but the rising sun says that every ending makes room for a new day.

Death upright

Upright, Death marks the end of a chapter and the beginning of another. It almost never refers to physical death; instead it describes transformation – a job, a relationship, a habit, a belief or an identity that has run its course. Endings can be painful, but this card treats them as natural and necessary. Something has to be cleared for something new to grow. When it appears, the change is often already underway. The healthiest response is to let go with gratitude rather than cling to what is finished.

Death reversed

Reversed, Death suggests resistance to a change that needs to happen. You may be holding on to a situation you have outgrown, afraid of what comes after, or repeating the same pattern because ending it feels too hard. The longer an ending is postponed, the heavier it tends to feel. The card invites you to ask what is really over, and what small step would help you release it.
