Symbolism of the card
A warrior in armour stands in a chariot beneath a starry canopy, a crescent moon on each shoulder and a city behind him. Two sphinxes, one black and one white, sit before the chariot, pulling in opposite directions – yet he holds no reins. He steers by will alone. The card shows victory won not by force but by keeping opposing drives under control and moving forward together.
The Chariot upright
Upright, The Chariot says that progress is possible if you stay focused and committed. It is the card of overcoming obstacles, pushing through doubts and channelling conflicting emotions toward a single goal. It can describe a move, a journey, a competition or a project gathering speed. The sphinxes remind you that success does not require the absence of inner conflict – only the ability to steer it. Decide where you are going, keep your eyes on it, and do not let distractions pull you off course.
The Chariot reversed
Reversed, The Chariot suggests that the sphinxes are pulling in different directions. You may feel stuck, unsure where you are heading, or torn between two goals. Momentum will return once you are clear about what you actually want.
