Symbolism of the card

A religious figure in red robes and a triple crown sits between two grey pillars, raising his right hand in blessing and holding a triple cross in his left. Two crossed keys lie at his feet, and two followers kneel before him, ready to receive his teaching. He is the bridge between the sacred and everyday life – the keeper of tradition, ritual and knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

The Hierophant upright

Upright, The Hierophant points to the value of established paths: education, mentors, institutions, rituals and communities that share your values. It can describe learning from someone experienced, following a proven method, or taking part in a tradition that gives life meaning. It is also a card of commitment in a formal sense – ceremonies, contracts, belonging to a group. When it appears, there is wisdom in doing things the tried-and-tested way, at least for now, and in seeking advice from someone who knows the territory.

The Hierophant reversed

Reversed, The Hierophant suggests that the usual rules do not fit you right now. You may be questioning beliefs you were raised with, pushing against an institution, or feeling the need to find your own way of doing things. This can be healthy growth – but the card also warns against rebelling just for the sake of it, or against dogma of any kind, including your own. Keep what still feels true and release what no longer does.
